COVID-19 Vaccines for Children: Hear from the Experts!

This week Rocketship’s Bay Area team hosted a town hall with Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital – Stanford featuring Dr. Ryan Padrez and Dr. Yvonne Maldonado.

We want to ensure our families have all the information they need to make an informed decision about the COVID-19 vaccines for children. In this webinar, the doctors further explained COVID-19, the difference in cases between vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals, and answer questions we have heard from Rocketship parents.

Key Facts Shared By Dr. Yvonne Maldonado

For adults 18 and older, COVID-19 hospitalization rate is 12 times higher in unvaccinated individuals.
Among children ages 5-11, there have been over 8,000 children hospitalized in the United States, which is a similar rate to influenza (flu) hospitalizations.
Over 2,351 schools across the country were closed from August, 2021-October 2021 as a result of COVID-19 cases.
The studies that have been done for children were for the Pfizer vaccine for five to eleven-year-olds. More than 3,000 were vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine in this trial and the vaccine was over 90% effective for preventing COVID-19.
We now know that after six months after receiving the vaccine, adults will need a booster vaccine because the effectiveness of the vaccine will begin to wear off. We don’t yet know if children will need a booster.

It was in the news last month that Sutter Health’s pediatric clinic in Antioch accidentally gave 14 children the adult dosage, not the child dosage, of the COVID-19 vaccine.
