As a tennis star and Olympic gold medalist Andre Agassi traveled the world for over 20 years. He said in his travels, he was struck by the inequality he saw, particularly in education. He said he saw kids who didn’t have hope, dreams, ownership in their life or a choice, all because they didn’t have education. “That was my story growing up,” he said at Rocketship Dream Community Prep in Antioch on Thursday. “I didn’t have a choice.” Agassi, who helped fund the school building through the Turner-Agassi Education Facilities Fund, was speaking at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the school that opened this year. Agassi has developed and delivered over 100 buildings to charter school operators around the country, including Rocketship Dream Community Prep. And that’s how an eighth grade dropout ended up building schools.
