Washington Commanders Rookies Volunteer For Day of Service at Rocketship Rise Academy
by Sean Floyd, Rocketship DC Director of External Affairs
On Wednesday, May 29th, the NFL’s Washington Commanders Football Team paid a visit to Rocketship Rise Academy, in Southeast Washington, DC. The rookie class of 2024 Commanders played catch and did art projects with Rocketeers after partnering with OutTeach to build out the outdoor Learning Lab space at Rocketship Rise Academy.
“This is incredible,” wide receiver Luke McCaffrey said. “This is kind of the rookie’s first opportunity to really dive into the community. For the guys that aren’t from here, this is our new home. This is kind of the place we’re going to take pride in, and it’s special to be able to connect with that.”
Cornerback Mike Sainristil agreed with McCaffrey.
“I love it,” he said. “The kids, it’s always a fun time to be around the kids, especially being able to do events and just show them what it feels like……to be with us.”

Thank you to the Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation for making our Rocketeers smile from ear-to-ear. And thank you to OutTeach for partnering with Rocketship DC on building another outdoor Learning Lab. OutTeach helps schools across the country transform the outdoors into active learning labs that unlock the wonder of science for students. This program enhances Rocketship’s in-classroom science curriculum by creating hands-on learning opportunities outside of the classroom, while also boosting the overall well-being of our Rocketeers by connecting with nature. Through partnerships with the Commanders Foundation, OutTeach, and so many more community partners, we’re creating a future where every student – regardless of background, resources, or learning differences – can have a world class education in their neighborhood.
